Marketing any destination in the world these days is more challenging than ever. With concerns about security, budgets and time away from home and work, travelers are arguably more selective than ever about their leisure travel plans. At the same time, marketers are often faced with shrinking budgets and increasing expenses. Marketing expenses must be stretched as far as possible.
With countless destinations vying for limited consumer travel dollars, creativity has always been key to any successful destination marketing program, and now, more than ever, is the most critical component of any plan.
That's where the Society of American Travel Writers comes in. By hosting an annual convention of this group of professional travel journalists and marketers, destinations can successfully shine the spotlight on their locations through the eyes - and eventual stories and photographs - of these visiting journalists.
Founded in 1955, the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) is a professional association whose purpose is to promote responsible journalism, provide professional support and development for its members, and encourage the conservation and preservation of travel resources worldwide.
In magazines and newspapers, travel books and guides, radio and television programs, websites and social media, SATW members provide complete, accurate and interesting information on travel destinations, facilities and services.
SATW exists so professional travel writers, photographers, lecturers and marketers from North America can compare notes, network, reinforce professionalism and maintain standards for travel journalism. The organization of more than 1,200 members has several regional chapters and professional councils that meet regularly.
Once a year, the entire organization offers a multi-day convention for all of its members. This document explains what is involved in hosting the annual meeting and the bidding procedures:
