Pigeon Forge (Tennessee) Department of Tourism

Ideal Journalist (by category) to stop by and visit with you.

  1. Journalists working in all media who cover multi-faceted domestic travel destinations.
  2. Journalists interested in family travel.
  3. Journalists who are cover national parks, festivals, theme parks and niche travel (groups, couples, autumn leaf-peepers, outdoor enthusiasts).

Top 3 Reasons a Journalist Should Visit You at Marketplace:

  1. 75th anniversary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park—2009 is the 75th anniversary of America’s most visited national park (9+ million visitors each year), which is Pigeon Forge’s next-door neighbor. Six Pigeon Forge special events are sanctioned as official anniversary events. One is Dolly’s Homecoming Parade, which features entertainer Dolly Parton as grand marshal, and another is Wilderness Wildlife Week, a week of free programs and activities about enjoying Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
  2. Affordable family destination—Pigeon Forge is a family magnet reachable by more than half the nation’s population in a day’s drive or less. Affordable destinations with broad appeal—and new story angles—interest consumers and editors, especially in the current economy. Pigeon Forge is a vibrant, ever-changing destination that always has new story angles. (For instance: Pigeon Forge’s four-month Winterfest celebration has been named one of the Top 100 Events in North America for 2009.)
  3. Debbie Reynolds—Pigeon Forge already has Dolly Parton, and now Debbie Reynolds is coming to town with the Debbie Reynolds Hollywood Motion Picture Museum. It’s part of a much larger $114 million attraction called Belle Island Village (retail, dining, lodging). Reynolds, widely known for having amassed a movie memorabilia collection valued at more than $50 million, chose Pigeon Forge—a place in the heartland—for her museum. A companion attraction of similar scale is the Darrell Waltrip Racing Experience that highlights the action, thrills and bent metal of stockcar racing.

Faulkenberry Certain

Client: Little St. Simons Island

Ideal Journalist (by category) to stop by and visit with you.

The ideal journalist will be intrigued by Little St. Simons Island … a privately owned 10,000 acre barrier island off the coast of Georgia. interested in eco-travel, history (property owned by the same family for 100 years) and nature travel to relatively uninhabited areas, sustainable tourism -- Little St. Simons Island hosts only 30 guests at a time. The Lodge and accommodations are the only facilities on the island which boasts maritime forests, marshes and 10 miles of sandy beach along the Atlantic Ocean.

Top 3 Reasons a Journalist Should Visit You at Marketplace:

1. Celebrating a century of leaving well enough alone. This has been the year-long theme on Little St. Simons Island, Georgia as this 10,000-acre barrier island off the Atlantic coast observes a century of environmental stewardship and ownership by one family. Since 1908, Little St. Simons Island has been owned one family who kept it as a private family retreat until 1979, when the Island was first opened to guests. And while the 2008 anniversary year has welcomed a record number of visitors, they have arrived in small handfuls–only 30 overnight guests are permitted at a time to ensure a true private island experience.

2. Vastly different from most other barrier islands along the Atlantic seaboard, Little St. Simons Island remains virtually undeveloped. While guests enjoy accommodations and services of the highest caliber, the devotion of the Island’s owners and staff to maintaining the natural ecological state of the Island remains foremost. Guest activities: shelling along the 7 miles of beach, birding, turtle walks and in-depth Island exploring–are led by gifted naturalists and are designed to encourage an appreciation for and understanding of the island, its ecosystems and wildlife.

3. The Island has received international recognition for its efforts. Green Globe, a global benchmarking, certification and improvement program for sustainable travel and tourism, has awarded its Benchmark Certification to Little St. Simons Island–one of only two destinations in the United States listed on the Green Globe site.

Beyond the honoring of its last 100 years, Little St. Simons Island, a Green Globe is now keenly focused on the years to come, aggressively engaging in a host of eco-sensitive initiatives aimed at preserving the Island’s primeval setting in perpetuity. It begins the moment guests set foot on Little St. Simons Island (arrival by boat is the only way to get there) where ornamental plants on the grounds of the Lodge compound have been removed and replaced by strictly indigenous varieties. And it continues with the three daily meals that are included in guest rates. Now some of the vegetables and herbs prepared by the kitchen are grown and gathered in the Island’s "USDA Certified Organic" garden–one of only a few gardens in southeast Georgia to have earned this designation. Other examples of the Island’s commitment to sustainable-use tourism that limits impact on the Island’s environment include: comprehensive recycling, composting for garden uses, no use of plastic water bottles (guests are each given their own personal Nalgene bottles), and the recent removal of the Island’s riding horses. Also, work is underway to replace the air conditioning systems in two of the Island’s guest houses to geothermal systems.

Top 3 Reasons a Journalist Should Visit You at Marketplace:

1) Restored Iconic Grosvenor House in London Becomes a JW Marriott

Following a four-year, multi-million pound restoration, the iconic Grosvenor House – now London’s largest five-star hotel with 494 rooms and suites -- was recently re-introduced to the world as Grosvenor House, A JW Marriott Hotel. The Grosvenor House hotel first opened its doors to the public in May 1929 and quickly attracted a fashionable crowd, from Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson to Ella Fitzgerald and Jacqueline Onassis. Many original features of the period have been retained, and opulent marble bathrooms acknowledge an Art Deco influence. Five bars and four dining options include the new classic French brasserie BORD’EAUX run by La Trompette’s former head chef, Ollie Couillaud. This autumn the hotel will unveil Corrigan’s of Mayfair, the signature restaurant of celebrity chef, Richard Corrigan. The hotel’s Park Room, overlooking Hyde Park, offers one of London’s finest afternoon teas. Also restored are the hotel’s conference and banqueting facilities, including the famed Great Room, London’s largest banqueting space holding up to 2,000 and originally an ice rink where Queen Elizabeth II learned to skate. To cap off the magnificent renovation, Grosvenor House, A JW Marriott Hotel will introduce a luxurious new spa in 2010.

2) JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Raise Bar on Quality, Locally Sourced Ingredients

Chefs at the 36 luxury JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts worldwide are on a mission: to provide global JW guests unique food experiences that support, celebrate and showcase wellness through preparation of organic, local, sustainable and socially responsible ingredients. "JW chefs worldwide have done this for years, but we are now raising the bar," says Brad Nelson, corporate executive chef for Marriott International. The goal is to enable guests to maintain their wellness regimens when they travel but to also sample new, authentic flavors from the countries and regions they are visiting. JW chefs from Dubai to Denver are sourcing fresh ingredients from local artisans, organic farms, fair trade producers and sustainable fisheries and creating innovative, locally inspired dishes. For example, the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa -- located on the Andaman Sea in the south of Thailand -- has enviable access to local fisherman, and the hotel can showcase jumbo tiger prawns, sea bass and the famous Phuket lobster caught locally. JW chefs are also charged with creating truly innovative vegetarian/flexitarian dishes such as grilled vegetable panini with goat cheese at the JW Jarkarta; pear carpaccio with parmesan nuggets and carmelized crepes at the JW Cancun; Vietnamese vegetable rice-paper rolls with Nuoc Cham dressing and goat cheese ravioli with sautéed zucchini, raisins, pine nuts and fresh basil at the JW Hong Kong; and pumpkin stew with chili and dark chocolate shavings at the JW Dubai.

3) Marriott International to Nearly Triple Its Presence in Mexico in Five Years: Marriott recently announced it would add 29 branded Marriott hotels in Mexico to the 16 hotels and resorts it currently operates. The announcement includes two resorts on Mexico’s popular Riviera Maya by 2011: a 450-room JW Marriott Milla de Oro Resort & Spa and the upscale 150-room Renaissance Milla de Oro Resort. Also in the pipeline: the 320-room Mexico City Marriott Reforma Hotel opening later this year, the 286-room Aguascalientes Marriott Hotel and the 290-room Merida Marriott Hotel in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Popular hotels currently in operation include the elegant 299-room JW Marriott Mexico City, the 448-room JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa, the 418-room Casa Magna Marriott Cancun Resort, and the 404-room Casa Magna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa.

Music/Entertainment, Arts and Culture, Lifestyle, Leisure Travel, Cultural Tourism, Luxury Travel, Festivals and Special Events, Architecture, Gay/Lesbian Travel, United States: West

Top 3 Reasons a Journalist Should Visit You at Marketplace:

  1. 75% of U.S. adult travelers attended a cultural activity or event while on a trip in the past year. This translates to an estimated 109.8 million U.S. adults. According to the Travel Industry Association, entertainment is the #3 activity for U.S. domestic travel (shopping is #2 and dining #1). Seattle Opera, one of the premier cultural attractions in the Pacific Northwest, draws visitors from four continents, nineteen countries, and 49 states. The company has achieved the highest per capita attendance of any major opera company in the United States. What makes Seattle Opera so appealing?
  2. Seattle Opera is recognized internationally for its theatrically compelling and musically accomplished performances, especially the Opera’s interpretations of the works of Richard Wagner. In August, 2009, Seattle Opera will again present Wagner’s complete Ring Cycle. The 2001 and 2005 Seattle Opera Ring cycles sold out nearly a year in advance. Why?
  3. Readers of Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler voted Seattle one of their top ten favorite cities to visit. Seattle Opera is one of the jewels of the Emerald City. Marion Oliver McCaw Hall, the company’s performance home, opened to rave reviews in 2003. With state of the art acoustics, the design objective was to create a venue that engages the entire community. The glass-enclosed structure has won numerous architectural awards for its "extraordinary collaboration between disciplines" and "elegant integration of architecture, landscape, lighting and theatre," allowing audiences to experience the ever-changing Northwest light while opening the lobby to the view of all who pass by. Learn about the plans for the new Seattle Opera Center, and find out what McCaw Hall offers that no other opera house can claim.

Tourism Niagara represents the Region of Niagara - 12 municipalities that make up Niagara, which includes the communities of Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, over 70 wineries, the Welland Canal and the many other attractions, history, heritage, arts and culture of Niagara.

Ideal Journalist (by category) to stop by and visit with you.

Family Travel, agri- tourism, wine and culinary, history, golf, green tourism, theatre, arts and culture, weekend escapes,

Top 3 Reasons a Journalist Should Visit You at Marketplace:

For years, travel stories about Niagara have focused on the famous Horseshoe Falls and various ways to experience the nearby attractions, but the Niagara region is much more than a visit to see the Falls. Cycling, hiking, golfing and wine tasting at one of the many estate wineries are just some of the many region-wide activities that thrive beyond the Falls due to the mild climate that allows us to enjoy the outdoors from April to November.

HISTORY & HERITAGE

Within the region of Niagara, is the historic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, formerly known as Newark, the first capital of Upper Canada. In the 1800’s Niagara was the frontier, protected by Forts at either end of the Niagara River and was the location of the bloodiest battles waged during the War of 1812. Niagara was also the end of the Underground Railroad, the first taste of freedom for escaping slaves from the US south. In the early 1800’s William Hamilton Merrit built an engineering marvel – the Welland Canal – the first of four canals to transport vessels between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Learn more about our history and heritage.

NIAGARA IS WINE COUNTRY

Niagara is the Napa of the North, over 70 wineries produce award-winning red, white and rosé wines, as well as our Canadian specialty – Icewine. Alongside the growth of the wine industry, our Niagara chefs have been creating a culinary style that is unique to the area, using local suppliers for fruits, vegetables, herbs and more.

CYCLING

Cycling in Niagara has been described as offering some of the best routes in Canada. Scenic waterways, vineyards, orchards, the 56 kilometre Niagara Parkway Recreation trail from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, and for serious cyclists the Greater Niagara Circle Route is 140 kilometres and includes the Waterfront Trail, the Welland Canals Trail, the Friendship Trail and the Niagara River Recreation Trail.

Rob McCorkle

  Texas Parks & Wildlife Department

Clients: Texas State Parks, Texas nature tourism programs

Ideal Journalist (by category) to stop by and visit with you.

Travel journalists who specialize in covering adventure travel, conservation & environment, history, motorcoach travel, state parks, the "whole other country" of Texas and the Southwest.

Top 3 Reasons a Journalist Should Visit You at Marketplace:

  1. Texas has one of the largest state park systems in the U.S. with recreational and historic sites that rival many national park sites, from Palo Duro Canyon and Caddo Lake state parks to treasured heritage sites, such as Washington-on-the-Brazos, where Texas declared it independence from Mexico, and the San Jacinto Battlegrounds where Texians secured their independence in an 18-minute battle against Santa Anna’s army.
  2. To discover the changes occurring in the "other" Big Bend park – Big Bend Ranch State Park. Two hours up the Rio Grande from the national park sits the 300,000-acre state park encompassing remarkable prehistoric rock art, geologic wonders, desert springs and waterfalls, easy access to the Rio Grande for rafting and kayaking, and dozens of newly opened primitive backcountry campsites. Your readers should know about this high desert country getaway where the West is truly wild.
  3. To find out about the soon-to-open Resaca de la Palma State Park near the southernmost tip of Texas. This 1,700-acre semi-tropical park is the final wing of the multisite World Birding Center. Here, visitors can experience nature along the Texas-Mexico border as it was in the days when the Rio Grande regularly overflowed, filling abandoned coils of river bed. Water has been pumped into ancient river curves, creating a rich birding environment 4 miles from Brownsville.

Top 3 Reasons a Journalist Should Visit You at Marketplace:

1. Victoria is "Full of Life" – Year after year, Victoria, British Columbia is consistently ranked among the top 3 cities and Vancouver Island the top island in North America by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure Magazines. Victoria is a unique destination where old world charm, heritage architecture, afternoon tea and beautiful gardens combine with new world experiences available in Victoria's back yard which consists of the Pacific Ocean, old-growth rainforest and an agricultural and wine region. Visitors can go whale watching, kayaking, surfing golfing, hiking and cycling in one of Canada’s fittest cities, experience the arts and culture of British Columbia’s capital city and get a "taste" of the island in Canada’s fastest growing wine region.

2. Victoria’s Cast of Culinary Characters – From the Seaweed Lady to a mushroom hunting Benedictine Monk to raising North America’s only genuine herd of European river water buffalo, Victoria, British Columbia and its surrounding area boast some of the most unusual and creative culinary characters in the world. Don’t miss Victoria’s "paddle thru" restaurant for kayakers or take-out fish restaurant in an "upcycled" shipping container. Victoria’s wine region, known as The Wine Islands, is the fastest growing wine region in Canada and has also become the spirits centre of Canada. Three producers: a winemaker, cidermaker and brewmaster, have begun distilling. Winery tours by boat, edible garden tours, an urban forage by foot and culinary boot camps are just some of the unique ways visitors can sample a taste of the island.

3. Green Guide to Victoria – Victoria, British Columbia is home to Dockside Green, the world’s greenest building (with the highest LEED Platinum score in the world), and Harbour Air, North America’s first carbon neutral airline. According to the most recent census, more people cycle or walk to work in Victoria than in any other city in Canada. In fact, Victoria is second only to Davis, CA in North America when it comes to daily per capita commuters. Boasting the largest percentage of bike riders in the country makes Victoria the cycling capital of Canada. As a result, visitors to Victoria looking to sample the local island lifestyle discover how walkable and cycle-friendly the city is to explore. Now, the Green Collective has emerged in Victoria with a green shopping and restaurant guide for visitors. And, the list of sustainable initiatives goes on and on.

Top 3 Reasons a Journalist Should Visit You at Marketplace:

Generations of families began making the "Christmas House" part of their holiday traditions and can continue to do so at Festival of Lights and see favorites such as a Christmas tree made of 7,500 green toothpicks, wreaths formed from egg cartons, table decorations constructed with seed pods, and a chandelier fashioned from wire coat hangers.

Eco-tourism- Palo Duro Canyon State Park, a great eco-tourism destination, with over 30,000 acres. Hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding and more. It is one of America’s largest canyons. Sleep in cabins on the rim.

Food- Beef is at the center of Amarillo, from ranches to feed yards to auctions to restaurants. Write the definitive story on beef from Amarillo.

Western- Amarillo is home to the nation’s largest horse registry and association, American Quarter Horse Association. Also a great museum and hall of fame. Every cowboy needs a good horse!

History- Amarillo is the only major Texas city on Historic Route 66. About mid-way on the route between Chicago and LA. Use Amarillo as a base to explore this piece of history.

Native American- The Kwahadi Museum of the American Indian, a relatively new museum with top-notch artifacts and artwork, is home to the Kwahadi Indian dancers, troop of Amarillo area youth who perform around the world.

Top 3 Reasons a Journalist Should Visit You at Marketplace:

The historic presidential election and high-profile inauguration are putting Washington, DC in the spotlight in 2008 and 2009. DC’s hotels and restaurants, along with its museums and attractions, are celebrating with political packages, campaign cocktails and election-themed exhibitions.

On another presidential note: February 12, 2009 marks the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln, and DC’s hotels, restaurants, museums and cultural attractions are paying tribute to the former president with a citywide cultural tourism celebration, part of a nationwide salute to the 16th president. Highlights include the reopening of Ford’s Theatre after a lengthy renovation, ground-breaking exhibitions and the reenactment of Marion Anderson’s historic concert at the Lincoln Memorial. New attractions, including the National Museum of American History (reopening Nov. 21) and the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center (opening December 2) are also joining in the celebration.

For budget-minded travelers and anyone who’s feeling the pinch of a shaky economy, DC serves up an unmatched collection of free and low-cost attractions and experiences. In fact, we’ve built a list of more 100 free and almost free experiences that you can only find in DC and new "Staying Power" hotel packages that emphasize the value that DC delivers.

Donna Schorr

Director of Communications

Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation

Client: Philadelphia and The Countryside®

Ideal Journalist (by category) to stop by and visit with you.

Print, broadcast and online media interested in people or destination stories. Arts & culture, food and dining, history, historic preservation, outdoor pleasures, design and fashion, new music and musicians.

Top 3 Reasons a Journalist Should Visit You at Marketplace:

1) It’s easy for your readers to get to Philadelphia. We’re 350 miles from 25% of the country’s population. We’re two hours from New York City, three hours from Washington D.C and one hour from Atlantic City. Getting here is easy—whether it’s by car, plane, train or bus. Center City Philadelphia is simply navigated by foot (or public transportation) and makes up just 25 blocks from west to east—a stretch filled with three centuries of stunning architecture. It’s no more than an hour drive to the nearby countryside—made up of Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties—where scenic views, lush gardens and quaint towns paint the landscape. Your readers/audience will want to make the easy trip to Philly in 2009 to see two blockbuster exhibitions, Cezanne and Beyond, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Galileo, Medici and The Age of Astronomy at The Franklin.

2) On June 24, 2008, TripAdvisor®, the world’s largest travel community, announced the top 10 patriotic attractions in the U.S. based on TripAdvisor travelers and editors. Independence National Historical Park ranked #3.

The Liberty Bell Center, Independence Hall, the National Constitution Center. They’re within three blocks of one another, and they all tell the story of our nation’s humble but heroic beginnings. It was on the streets of Historic Philadelphia where our founding fathers conversed, debated and ultimately formed a new nation. And in the nearby countryside, the story evolves even more at Valley Forge National Historical Park, the Brandywine Battlefield, Washington Crossing State Park and other not-to-be missed historic sites. This presidential year gives a new reason to learn more about our political system, and new exhibitions such as Headed to the White House (2008) and America, I AM (2009) offer visitors another lesson on what it means to be an American.

3) Philadelphia is full of the unexpected and just waiting to be discovered.

Did you know that 2,700—and counting—massive murals grace the walls of nearly every neighborhood in the city? Ever heard about the Italian Market, the oldest and largest working outdoor market in the country? In the know about our 200-plus bring-your-own-bottle restaurants? What about Fairmount Park, the nation’s largest urban park with more than 4,400 acres of public space and hundreds of bike paths and walking trails? Oh, and how about the city’s newest unexpected find tucked away in the lobby of the sparkling new Comcast Center? It’s a 2,000-square-foot LED video screen that projects computer-generated images so realistic you’ll think they’re jumping out of the wall. Wondering what’s next to discover? On October 18, 2008, the Please Touch Museum will open in Memorial Hall, a dramatic historic space in Fairmount Park. The hands-on museum will now be housed in a building that was constructed for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition, a massive 100th birthday party for the nation.

Ideal Journalist (by category) to stop by and visit with you.

Print, online and broadcast media interested in wildlife, outdoors, festivals, spas in the forest, and unsung urban experiences.

WILDLIFE ENTHUSIASTS – Manitoba is known for wildlife congregations and migrations of all kinds. Pick your creature—hundreds of polar bears, thousands of beluga whales, thousands of red-sided garter snakes, tens of thousands of birds—and we’ll tell you when to visit.

CULTURE LOVERS – Manitoba has the largest French-speaking population west of the Great Lakes. Manitoba has the largest Icelandic community outside of Iceland. Winnipeg, Manitoba has the largest urban Aboriginal (Canadian Native) population in Canada. Festivals celebrate each of these. www.festivalvoyageur.mb.ca is one of Canada’s largest winter festivals in Western Canada. www.icelandicfestival.com is often visited by the president of Iceland and www.manitoahbee.com is a showcase of Aboriginal dance and music.

ANGLERS – With more than 100,000 lakes, Manitoba has incredible fishing with northern pike the size of your left leg in lodges from rustic to over-the-top. Catfish, Arctic grayling, perch, pickerel and more.

QUIRKY ANGLE TYPES – your eyes light up when I mention the rugged Hudson Bay Quest dogsled race, sleeping in an igloo, snorkeling with whales, drinking birch wine, or growing your leg hair at the Trapper’s Festival in The Pas, Manitoba.

Top 3 Reasons a Journalist Should Visit You at Marketplace:

1) NEW RESORT AND SPA IN THE WILDERNESS – HECLA AFTER DARK

Set amid the wild beauty of Hecla Provincial Park on the 14th largest freshwater lake in the world, Hecla Oasis Resort is Manitoba’s newest and only five-star resort. Besides a high-end spa and challenging golf course, the resort will soon offer unique one-day wonders such as owl prowls, starlight snowshoes, snake den safaris and birding samplers. Multi-day adventures include an epicurean adventure that has visitors cook like the settlers did at a historic Hudson Bay trading post, learn about organic and sustainable farming, sample the bounty of commercial fishermen and learn gourmet cooking secrets from Hecla’s French chef and author, Stephane Pierre Thierry. For more experiences coming in June or September 2009, visit www.heclaoasis.com/adventures

2) WINNIPEG, MANITOBA is a city of cool superlatives. The Exchange District National Historic Site showcases 30 blocks of early 20thcentury architecture unrivalled in Canada. At the time of construction, in 1968, the Winnipeg Floodway was the second largest earth-moving project in the world after the Panama Canal. Winnipeg has the largest, mature elm tree urban forest in North American with approximately 170,000 elms. Winnipeg has the sunniest winter season in Canada with 358 hours of sunshine and the longest skating rink on which to enjoy that sunshine. Winnipeg Art Gallery has the world's largest collection of contemporary Inuit art. The Hudson's Bay Company, the world's oldest corporation, has donated a collection of over 10,000 artifacts to The Manitoba Museum.

3) MANITOBA HAS MORE BELUGA WHALES than anywhere else on the planet – and many thousands of them feed and frolic in the rivers emptying into the Hudson Bay, near Churchill, along Manitoba’s northern ocean coastline. Visitors can see them five different ways, from a kayak, helicopter, Zodiak, coast-guard boat or through a mask underwater.
